(Reno - Rome)/2

Sleep Book

I used to read “Sleep Book” by Dr. Seuss a lot. On one page there is a line about a machine that listens and looks into everyone’s home on a mountain halfway between Reno and Rome. I was kind of curious if this place actually exists. The midpoint for the short way and the long way are both in the ocean, but there are other cities named Reno and Rome, not just the ones in Nevada and Italy.

Elevation

So which midpoint is closest to being on a mountain? I queried an elevation API for all 70 midpoints (35 city pairs with 2 routes each).

Rank Reno Rome Elevation Location
1NevadaWisconsin5,200 ftEastern Wyoming
2NevadaGeorgia3,694 ftWestern Kansas
3NevadaOhio3,012 ftNebraska
4OhioGeorgia2,306 ftKentucky / Tennessee border
5OhioNew York1,972 ftNorthern Pennsylvania

The winner is the midpoint between Reno, Nevada and Rome, Wisconsin at 5,200 feet in eastern Wyoming near Guernsey.

Nearest Peaks

Maybe it was referring to an actual mountain that was nearby though? I queried OpenStreetMap for the closest peaks to each midpoint:

Midpoint Nearest Peak Distance Peak Elevation
Nevada ↔ WisconsinSquaw Rock35 km6,844 ft
Nevada ↔ GeorgiaRock Hill68.8 km3,888 ft
Nevada ↔ OhioGiant Hill16.5 km3,389 ft
Ohio ↔ GeorgiaFox Knob4.4 km3,271 ft
Ohio ↔ New YorkRed Hill2.5 km1,640 ft

The midpoint between Reno, Ohio and Rome, New York is only 2.5 km from Red Hill in northern Pennsylvania. For something more mountain-y, Fox Knob in the Appalachian foothills of Kentucky is just 4.4 km from the Reno, Ohio to Rome, Georgia midpoint. The Wyoming area near the highest midpoint has Squaw Rock (6,844 ft) about 35 km away — probably the most mountain-like candidate for the book.
